A Zero-Antibiotic Future: New Anthoney’s Farms Leads the Charge Against AMR in Sri Lanka

Leading the National Conversation on AMR at Waters Edge Colombo

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is rapidly emerging as one of the most pressing global health challenges of the 21st century, threatening the effectiveness of life-saving medicines, food security, and public health worldwide. As resistant infections continue to rise, they undermine routine medical procedures and impose growing economic burdens. In this context, New Anthoney’s Farms is taking decisive steps in Sri Lanka to address AMR at its roots, demonstrating that responsible, sustainable farming practices are both achievable and essential.

Central to this advocacy was the recent Forum on Antimicrobial Resistance, held at The View, Waters Edge Colombo on 24 November 2025. Organized by New Anthoney’s Farms, the event brought together policymakers, industry leaders, healthcare professionals, veterinary experts, development partners, and media representatives — a testament to the company’s commitment to fostering cross-sector collaboration.

Dr. Anil Jasinghe, Secretary of Health, attended as Chief Guest, alongside Dr. Momoe Takeuchi, Officer in Charge of WHO Sri Lanka, as Guest of Honor. Representatives from the FAO and key institutions also participated, making the forum a platform for sharing insights and actionable recommendations to curb AMR in both human and animal health sectors.

A distinguished panel of experts discussed AMR from multiple angles — including veterinary bacteriology, regulatory frameworks, antimicrobial alternatives, public health nutrition, stewardship programmes, sustainable animal nutrition, and national surveillance strategies. The panel encouraged dynamic audience interaction, highlighting the connection between human and animal health in tackling AMR.

Hosting an AMR Awareness Session for students at the University of Ruhuna

New Anthoney's Farms is hosting an AMR Awareness Session for students at the University of Ruhuna, in collaboration with the Faculty of Agriculture. With insights from top speakers, including Dr. Subodha Wickramasinghe (Head – Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Ruhuna), Dr. Chandima Gajaweera, Prof. Indunil Pathirana, and Dr. Lahiru Sandaruwan (Veterinary Surgeon), we are engaging students from the Faculty of Agriculture.

Our goal is to inspire the next generation to understand and act on the critical issue of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) in food and animal science.

Empowering Employees for Change

Recognising that internal engagement is key, New Anthoney’s Farms also conducted a staff awareness programme at its Hanwella facilities. Employees were educated about the dangers of antibiotic misuse and the importance of producing truly antibiotic-free chicken including the company’s Harithahari line, which is raised without antibiotics.
